Open Handicap fleet using RYA PY handicaps and average lap time. Any class with 5 or more boats may be given a separate start.

  1. Rules
    • The event will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing 2021-2024 (RRS), the prescriptions of the RYA, (except as altered by these sailing instructions), the appropriate class rules (except as altered by these sailing instructions) and these sailing instructions.
    • Handicap numbers will be as per RYA YR 2023 List Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme.
  2. Conditions Of Entry
    • The safety of a boat and her entire management including insurance shall be the sole responsibility of the owner/competitor racing the boat. The establishment of these sailing instructions in no way limits or reduces the complete responsibility of the owner/competitor for his crew, the boat and the management thereof.
  3. Safety
    • Effective personal buoyancy shall be worn by all competitors whilst afloat.
    • Wetsuits or dry suits do not constitute effective personal buoyancy.
  4. Communications With Competitors
    • Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located in or in front of the Clubhouse.
    • There will be a competitor briefing on Saturday 24th June at 1145hrs, in front of the Clubhouse.
    • Any changes to the sailing instructions will be posted for at least 30 minutes before the advertised start time of the race or races concerned, except that any change to the schedule of races will be posted by 1900 hrs on the day before the change will take effect. Changes to the sailing instructions will be signalled by displaying International Code Flag ‘L’ on the Clubhouse flagstaff and two sound signals.
  5. Signals Made Ashore
    • Signals made ashore will be displayed on the flag mast above the club house.
    • When flag AP is displayed ashore, ‘1 minute’ is replaced with ‘not less than 30 minutes’ in the race signal AP.
  6. Schedule Of Races
    • Depending on the weather forecast, and progress made with the race schedule, additional races may be sailed on any day(s), at the discretion of the race officer.
    • To alert boats that a race or sequence of races will begin soon, a series of short sound signals may be given from the committee boat before a warning signal is displayed.
    • On the last day of the regatta no warning signal will be made after 1500hrs

  1. Course Area
    • All racing will take place in Largo Bay.
  2. Courses
    • The diagram below shows the courses to be sailed. Marks 1,2,3 and 4 are to be left to port.
    • ILCA 7, ILCA 6, ILCA 4, Enterprise, GP14 classes will be.
      • 1-3-4, 1-4, 1-3-4, 1-4 Finish
    • RS200 and 505 class course will be.
      • 2-4 until shorten course flag displayed.
    • Handicap class course for races 1, 3 and 5 will be.
      • 1-3-4, until shorten course flag displayed.
    • Handicap class course for races 2, 4 and 6 will be.
      • 1-4, until shorten course flag displayed.
    • For all classes. All boats must pass between the Committee Boat and mark F each windward leg (mark 4 to mark 1 or 2). Boats must not pass between the Committee Boat and marks S or F on downwind legs i.e. when sailing from mark 1, 2 or 3 to mark 4
    • Marks 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be 5ft tall yellow cylinder type marks with B.P. logo.
  1. The Start
    • Races shall be started as stated in rule 26 (all times taken from 1st warning) with classes starting at 3 minute intervals. Times shall be taken from the visual signals in the form of individual flags attached to poles and raised in sequence by the race committee; the failure of a sound signal shall be disregarded.
    • The starting order and class flags will be posted on the notice board by 12 noon on Saturday 24th June.
    • All races on each day will be sailed ‘back-to-back’ unless AP over H is flying on the Committee Boat at the end of the previous race.
    • Should AP over H be displayed, the time of the warning signal for the subsequent races will be posted on the notice board ashore No race will be started after 1500hrs on Sunday.
    • The start line will be between the mast of the Committee Boat displaying an orange flag and an outer start mark (S) which will be a yellow spherical danbuoy with a yellow flag laid to port of the Committee Boat.  An inner distance mark may be laid adjacent to the Committee Boat.  No boat may pass between the inner limit mark and the committee boat after the first warning signal of the start sequence.
    • Boats whose warning signal has not been made shall keep clear of the start line and of boats whose preparatory signal has been made.
  2. Recalls
    • Individual recalls will be signalled in accordance with rule 29.1 (Int. Code flag X). Note, flag X will be lowered when all recalled boats have returned to the pre-start side of the start line or 2 mins after the start, whichever is the earlier.
    • A general recall will be signalled in accordance with rule 29.2 except that the class or classes involved will start as laid out in the recall starting sequence as described in 11.3. Note, First Substitute will be lowered 2 mins. after the start.

If the last scheduled class is the only recalled class, the warning signal for the new start will be 1 minute after the First Substitute is lowered.
  1. The Finish
    • The finish line will be the line formed by the mast of the Committee Boat displaying an orange flag and a mark (F), which will be an orange spherical danbuoy with a red flag, laid to starboard of the Committee Boat or for a shortened course (in addition to the previously described finish line) the line formed by the pole on the Committee Boat and the nearby rounding mark.
    • The time limit for the first boat to finish for all classes will be 75 mins.
    • After the first boat of any class has finished, the Race Committee may finish other boats in that class at any point or points on the course. In such a case the Race Committee may award discretionary finishing positions. In awarding such positions the decision of the Race Committee is final and will not provide grounds for a competitor to seek redress.
  1. Protests
    • Printed Protest Forms will be available in the Clubhouse.  Protests must be lodged in the Clubhouse within 30 mins. of the protesting boat coming ashore after the last race of the day.  Protests will be heard at the end of each day’s racing at a time and place which will be advised 15 mins after the Protest Time Limit expires.
  2. Declarations
    • The act of crossing the finish line will be deemed to be a declaration by the Helmsman that the course has been completed in accordance with the sailing instructions.
  3. Scoring Systems
    • The event will be scored using the Low Point scoring system of Appendix A.  6 races are scheduled, of which 2 races shall be completed to constitute a valid series. Each boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores with her worst score discarded if four or more races have been completed.
  4. Alternative Penalties
    • Touching a Mark.
      • RRS 31 will apply to all boats, irrespective of any Class Rules to the contrary.
    • RRS 44.1 and 44.2 shall apply.
  5. Launching and Recovery
    • Competitors should take care when leaving and returning to the beach. If possible, two small danbuoys will be laid to mark the safest channel. Competitors should keep well within these buoys.
  6. Prizes
    • The prizegiving will be held in front of the Clubhouse as soon as possible after the finish of the last race.
